Press Play is the name given to the most exciting week at The Australian National University. The Orientation Week (O-WeeK) and Welcome week marks the first week of academic semester each year, and is celebrated by a number of fun, exciting and colorful events planned throughout the week, for both new and returning students.
The Postgraduate and Research Students' Association (PARSA) at ANU tasked me to brand 2017's O-Week & Welcome Week. The theme for 2017's O-Week & Welcome week was 'PARSA Press Play'. PARSA wanted all the new and returning students to 'Press Play' on their 2017 academic year and witness an exciting two weeks of O-Week and Welcome Week.
Art Direction, Branding, Logo Design
'PARSA Press Play' as a concept was inspired by the rise of Boombox culture in the 90's. Hence, PARSA wanted to incorporate a retro looking Boombox within the artwork to help people visually relate to the whole theme.
Moreover, the events scheduled for O-Week & Welcome week were categorized under 5 different categories, linking back to the Boombox i.e. Press Play, Press Pause, Press Stop, Press Rewind and Press Forward.
Several options were sketched, fine-tuned and proposed which incorporated the Boombox and the typography in a fun and vibrant way. After several amendments, the final logo was approved by the team at PARSA.
After the primary logo for the event was developed, four logos were designed to represent each individual days of the week. All of the individual logos were comprised of different visual elements and colors to make them stand apart.
“Waleed has worked on several projects for PARSA, the Postgraduate Research Students' Association at the Australian National Univeristy, and has been a great asset for all our design needs. His recent work on PARSA's 2017 Orientation Week: Press Play as well as 2017 Women's Week has been outstanding! He not only adheres to pressing timelines, but is very professional, flexible and patient throughout the design process even though we often had several changes.”
Several marketing collaterals were designed to market the event on-campus. The collaterals included A3 Posters, Newsletter Ad, PARSA T-shirts & a huge 9x3 meter vinyl banner hanged at the most busiest spot of The Australian National University.
The Mega-event was marketed over all major Social Media platforms. The Main event as well as sub-events were branded according to each event day's branding i.e. Press Play, Press Pause, Press Stop etc.
